Evaluation of Work

Evaluation of Work

Let's do a thought experiment about work.

A lazy and stupid, but very lucky salesman Luck Kim got a very good performance because of his client hit the jackpot. On the other hand, a very diligent and capable fellow, Unluck Lee performed poorly with his customer who was in bad situation. Who worked better?

And there is one more person. His name is Soso Park. He has achieved a moderate performance with moderate effort. Who's work is the best?

Many companies give Luck Kim a better grade. Or, some companies acknowledge the effort of Unluck Lee. But both are wrong in physics.

The works of Kim and Lee are similar and less than average. Park did more work than Kim and Lee in physics. Because work is multiplication of two factors: effort and performance.

Multiplication is different from addition.. Let's assume, If the effort is 1 to 5 and the performance is 1 to 5 Kim's work is 1 X 5 = 5 Lee's work is 5 X 1 = 5 But Park's work is 3 X 3 = 9

So, Park is the best.

I know well that it is too simple to explain the complex reality world, with ‘1 to 5’. However, I wanted to make it considered that the work must be with two factors. And I also wanted to say that multiplication can make a huge difference. (The person who got 5 performance and 5 effort could get 25 points of work. It is 5 times that of Kim or Lee.)

Personnel evaluation is one of the most important action of leadership. And it is one of the most difficult action in organizational management. However, Physics teaches leaders how to watch and evaluate their members and works.

Work is the multiplication of effort & performance.
